John Dingell
The members of the Brownstown Democratic Club were 100% behind John Dingell for continuing as Chair of the House Energy and Commerce Committee and are extremely disappointed that he did not prevail.
It's terrible that this divisive fight had to be brought up on the heels of such great Democratic victories. Shame on the Democrats behind this, and those who supported it.

Post-Election Wrap-Up
First of all, we should report that the Democratic Club's Endorsed Slate Won!
- All of the Township Board
- State Representative
- County-wide offices
- Circuit Judges
- Congress
- PRESIDENT
- Most remarkable of all, Diane Hathaway for Supreme Court Justice.
However, we also have disturbing news out of Washington D.C. In the midst of this historic victory for Democrats, a Congressman from California has chosen this moment to challenge our own Congressman John Dingell for his chairmanship of the Energy Commerce Committee. The timing of this, days after the Congressman's knee replacement, is suspect. It is unprecedented for Democrats to go after their own Chairman, absent a showing of complete ineffectiveness. On the other hand, it did happen for Republicans when Newt Gingrich ran Congress. We hope Speaker Pelosi will not allow this.
We strongly condemn any efforts to remove Congressman Dingell from the Chairmanship of Energy and Commerce.
We see this as detrimental to the auto industry and manufacturing in general. Is that the message Democrats want to send? We don't think so.

As we draw closer to the election, it becomes clear that the Republican party has lost its way. What do Republicans stand for? We don't know because all we hear from them is a series of negative, fear-based attacks based on conjecture instead of facts.
Examples:
Republicans have said Barack Obama was not born in the United States (untrue).
Republicans have said Barack Obama is a terrorist, or at least agrees with them (untrue).
Republicans have said Barack Obama is a Muslim (untrue). But even if it was true, think about how certain parts of the Republican party say it to mean that he would somehow be less of an American.
Republicans have said Barack Obama is not experienced or tested in foreign policy, but Sarah Palin is. We can only observe that we can see the moon from our house, but that doesn't make us astronauts, Sarah.
Republicans have said Barack Obama's call for a tax break for every one of us who makes under $250,000 a year is a Socialist or Communist idea. But somehow buying and running our banking system is not.
Republicans have said Barack Obama will blow the budget. Not only is that not true, but have they looked at their record over the last eight years?
Republicans have said John McCain is a maverick who fights against Washington insiders, but just about every key person in his campaign is a Washington lobbyist.
Republicans have said John McCain is someone who can fix the economy, but he has been in the Senate for almost 30 years and has never authored major legislation on the economy or banking. The closest he came was his personal involvement in the Keating Five banking scandal.
Republicans have said John McCain's tax plan is going to help Joe the Plumber. But Joe is not a licensed, certified, or union plumber. And McCain's tax plan would hurt him.

Supervisor Race
Our Club is supporting current Supervisor Art Wright. He's done a great job for our township and certainly deserves to be re-elected. Now that the Brownstown Together We Can slate swept several fake and/or unreliable Democrats off of the township Board, he will have a Board that can discuss things in a rational manner.

So, John McCain, got better things to do than your party on Election Night? That's just plain embarrassing. Let's hope Sarah Palin is not skipping the party, too.
Speaking of Sarah, who is the higest-paid person in her campaign? You'd never guess!
Politico.com: "There are people in this campaign who feel a real sense of loyalty to her and are really pleased with her performance and think she did a great job," said the McCain insider. "She has a real future in this party."

That's Sarah Palin, who is already distancing herself from McCain and her own campaign. Now that their defeat is becoming apparent, let the Republican infighting and blaming begin!

Even Joe Lieberman is doing it. Ripping on Palin shows he knows who is going to have the power in the Senate come January.
Here's a shocker: Joe the Fake Plumber might run for Congress. And here we thought he was some random guy who was playing catch with his son when he randomly decided to interrogate Barak Obama about the flat tax, just like all the other plumbers have done.
Yes, the same Average Joe who is the headline on the conservative Drudge Report : JOE THE PLUMBER 'SCARED FOR AMERICA' IF OBAMA PREZ. Gee, we are wondering if he is still undecided?
This Republican campaign employee who faked being robbed and attacked brings to mind a similar feeble lie recently from the Michigan College Republicans.
Congressman Dingell leads the call for auto industry help. We're fully supportive.
By the way, the Congressman had knee replacement surgery that went well.
Guess that anger temper thing runs in the family, eh John McCain? I half expected your brother called 911 because kids were on his grass and he just fertilized.

A Message from Congressman DIngell
Like you, I know that we are facing tremendous economic hardships. This is the greatest economic challenge that we as a country have faced since the Great Depression. Michigan has been feeling this pain for a long time, and now the rest of the country is catching up too. You can help me serve you more effectively by telling me directly how this economic crisis is affecting you. I want to hear your story: how are you and your neighbors coping and what do you need from Washington? Tell me your story right here.
The cost of living continues to rise steadily as we pay more for health care, groceries, gas and to heat our homes. The last eight years have brought us higher unemployment and stagnant wages, a growing disparity between the wealthiest Americans and the middle class and a sense that we will be unable to provide the next generation with better circumstances than we inherited. We need change and I have been working hard to help lead this country in a new direction. I want to share the things I am doing in Congress to try and help you.
Recently, I led the effort along with my colleagues from Michigan to secure $25 billion in loans to the auto industry to be used to re-tool existing facilities to build the next generation of cars, today. With this money we can help create green jobs right here in Michigan as we build more fuel efficient vehicles that will help reduce our dependence on foreign oil.
We have also been working diligently on a plan to stabilize the economy. The historic market collapse that we have seen in the last several weeks serves as a final verdict on eight years of failed economic practices, foolish deregulation and tax policies that reward companies for shipping jobs overseas instead of hiring our own. But now we must meet the challenge to ensure that people stay in their homes and small businesses have the equity to cover their payrolls.
Much remains to be accomplished in order to strengthen our economy. John McCain's plans for our economy will only exacerbate Michigan's economic woes. His proposal to tax healthcare benefits for the first time means that more Michiganders would lose their coverage. We cannot afford another 4 years of these Bush policies and that is all John McCain is offering.
Barack Obama has a plan to help America's middle class. He will cut taxes for 95% of American and help provide quality affordable healthcare for all Americans. We desperately need a change because we cannot afford more of the same. I hope that you will join me in working to elect Senator Barack Obama our next president and to increase Democratic majorities in both the House and Senate. Our next president will have a profound impact on our economy and your household finances.
We've had eight years of difficult times, debt and extreme partisanship. If we work together, I know we can reverse this course.

Weekend Update
How is the election going? Republicans can't even count on support in their traditional red states.
Here is the usual electoral map that breaks down the numbers.
This breaks down to good news about how Congress will look after the election.
Pity John McCain. This housing crisis has hit him eight times harder than the rest of us. Why, even wife Cindy didn't make as much money last year.
Anybody think McCain looked just goofy at the debate? You're right!
Joe the Plumber isn't one. And he owes taxes. And he lied about being in a union and buying a business. And his name is not Joe. We liked Joe Six-Pack better.
Congressman Dingell has been given a 100% rating for Conservation.
Racist Republicans are at it again.
Peggy Noon, speechwriter for Reagan and Bush, rips Sarah Palin.
Meanwhile, it turns out Palin can speak to reporters after all! Who knew?

10:05 p.m.: Hey, John McCain just pissed off his pro-life supporters by flip-flopping on them and saying that he would not impose a litmus test on his appointees to the Supreme Court. He praised Bryer and Ginsberg (two pro-choice Justices), too.

Pretty clear that Obama won the debate. McCain tried to stay on the attack, but failed.

Remember when the McCain campaign gave up on Michigan last week? They said they were going to focus on Maine, instead. Now the Republicans are pulling out of Wisconsin and Maine. So where are all of those Michigan campaign people who went to Maine going to go now?
