Dingell Calls for Creation of New Commission to Investigate Current Financial Crisis
Washington, DC - Congressman John D. Dingell (D-MI15) today introduced a resolution calling for a comprehensive investigation of the current financial crisis, which has generated $1.3 trillion in financial industry losses. In his statement, he said the new committee should not only examine the sources of the crisis, but also recommend how to prevent its causes from reoccurring in the future. Below are the Congressman’s remarks: “The Pecora Commission exposed a wide array of abusive practices by banks at the time of the Depression and resulted in the subsequent enactment of the Glass-Steagal Act of 1933 and Securities Act of 1934. It is my ardent hope that the resolution I introduce today will foster a coordinated approach among the multiple committees of jurisdiction on this matter and lead to legislation that re-imposes a strict regulatory framework upon the financial services industry. “As Ferdinand Pecora, the commission’s namesake, remarked about the outcome of its investigation, “Legal chicanery and pitch darkness were the banker’s stoutest allies.” I urge the members of this body to take heed of Pecora’s words, now more irrefutably accurate than ever, and support this resolution, which will establish a time-tested mechanism by which to investigate and remedy the various unsavory practices that have led our Nation to an economic precipice of gargantuan proportions. “Thank you, and yield back the balance of my time.”
Dingell Praises Governor Granholm, Advanced Battery Manufacturers on New Investment in Michigan
Dearborn, MI - Congressman John D. Dingell (D-MI15) praised Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm (D) and four advanced battery manufacturers that will commit almost $2 billion dollars to Michigan as they launch new manufacturing sites in the state. The new investment will create more than 6,600 jobs in Michigan. “I believe this project will be a big part of Governor Granholm’s legacy here in Michigan. She has put the state in a position to be the leader in the production of advanced battery manufacturing in our country. The United States desperately needs to be competitive in producing this green technology. She knew the companies would appreciate the outstanding workers and talent here in Michigan, and she made a wise move using tax incentives to close the deal. Now, it is up to all of us in the Michigan Congressional delegation to make sure these companies succeed. We will work with the Department of Energy to get them a fair opportunity for grant money. This project is critical right now and in Michigan’s long term future. This is one big step forward in making Michigan a leader in creating green technology to be used around the world.” Below are the four companies, their investments and the tax credits received:
Two companies have announced their site locations; Johnson Controls-SAFT will locate its plant in Holland and A123 has selected Livonia. Other plant locations have not yet been finalized. |
Dingell Update
Dear Friend,
As a result of our hard work in last year’s election, Michigan ’s Congressional delegation was recently ranked as the fourth most powerful in Congress (see article). We have Debbie Stabenow fighting for us in the Senate and we kept Carl Levin right where he belongs as our powerhouse senior Senator. As Chairman Emeritus of the Energy and Commerce Committee and Dean of the House, I continue to fight for health care for every American and increased food safety for all. Add to this a slew of focused policy makers such as my colleague from Northern Michigan, Bart Stupak, and two seats flipped from red to blue to give us Mark Schauer and Gary Peters—it is no surprise that Michigan is so powerful in Congress. It is also more evident than ever that elections matter. Thank you for using the election to ensure your voices are heard in the 111th Congress. When it comes to executive accountability we hear your voices loud and clear. As you know, we have spent much of the week grappling with the issue of how to hold AIG responsible for the obscene decision to pay $165 million in bonuses after receiving $170 billion of taxpayer money to stay afloat. At a time when hardworking men and women around the country are making sacrifices daily, why should AIG reward executives whose decisions contributed to this crisis? Today we passed a bill in the house that puts a 90 percent tax on any bonus paid by a company receiving money through the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP). This applies to more than just the financial sector; if union workers have to make concessions, so too should executives. We are all in this together and we will only recover when those on top floor offices wake up to the current reality. I look forward to continuing the work of President Obama and the Congress as we lead this country forward. |
Yesterday, I had the opportunity to attend the White House Regional Forum on Health Reform in Dearborn with Governor Granholm, Governor Doyle of Wisconsin, and Melody Barnes, Director of the White House Domestic Policy Council. This forum was the first of many to be held around the country where policymakers join in a discussion with citizens, listen to your concerns about the inefficiencies of the current health care system, and gather your ideas on how to rectify them. |
The members of the Brownstown Democratic Club were 100% behind John Dingell for continuing as Chair of the House Energy and Commerce Committee and are extremely disappointed that he did not prevail.
It's terrible that this divisive fight had to be brought up on the heels of such great Democratic victories. Shame on the Democrats behind this, and those who supported it.
First of all, we should report that the Democratic Club's Endorsed Slate Won!
However, we also have disturbing news out of Washington D.C. In the midst of this historic victory for Democrats, a Congressman from California has chosen this moment to challenge our own Congressman John Dingell for his chairmanship of the Energy Commerce Committee. The timing of this, days after the Congressman's knee replacement, is suspect. It is unprecedented for Democrats to go after their own Chairman, absent a showing of complete ineffectiveness. On the other hand, it did happen for Republicans when Newt Gingrich ran Congress. We hope Speaker Pelosi will not allow this.
We strongly condemn any efforts to remove Congressman Dingell from the Chairmanship of Energy and Commerce.
We see this as detrimental to the auto industry and manufacturing in general. Is that the message Democrats want to send? We don't think so.
VICTORY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
As we draw closer to the election, it becomes clear that the Republican party has lost its way. What do Republicans stand for? We don't know because all we hear from them is a series of negative, fear-based attacks based on conjecture instead of facts.
Examples:
Republicans have said Barack Obama was not born in the United States (untrue).
Republicans have said Barack Obama is a terrorist, or at least agrees with them (untrue).
Republicans have said Barack Obama is a Muslim (untrue). But even if it was true, think about how certain parts of the Republican party say it to mean that he would somehow be less of an American.
Republicans have said Barack Obama is not experienced or tested in foreign policy, but Sarah Palin is. We can only observe that we can see the moon from our house, but that doesn't make us astronauts, Sarah.
Republicans have said Barack Obama's call for a tax break for every one of us who makes under $250,000 a year is a Socialist or Communist idea. But somehow buying and running our banking system is not.
Republicans have said Barack Obama will blow the budget. Not only is that not true, but have they looked at their record over the last eight years?
Republicans have said John McCain is a maverick who fights against Washington insiders, but just about every key person in his campaign is a Washington lobbyist.
Republicans have said John McCain is someone who can fix the economy, but he has been in the Senate for almost 30 years and has never authored major legislation on the economy or banking. The closest he came was his personal involvement in the Keating Five banking scandal.
Republicans have said John McCain's tax plan is going to help Joe the Plumber. But Joe is not a licensed, certified, or union plumber. And McCain's tax plan would hurt him.
Our Club is supporting current Supervisor Art Wright. He's done a great job for our township and certainly deserves to be re-elected. Now that the Brownstown Together We Can slate swept several fake and/or unreliable Democrats off of the township Board, he will have a Board that can discuss things in a rational manner.
You can read about his opponent here. We sorta like his nickname around the police station: Unabomber.
