Dingell Calls for Creation of New Commission to Investigate Current Financial Crisis

Washington, DC - Congressman John D. Dingell (D-MI15) today introduced a resolution calling for a comprehensive investigation of the current financial crisis, which has generated $1.3 trillion in financial industry losses.  In his statement, he said the new committee should not only examine the sources of the crisis, but also recommend how to prevent its causes from reoccurring in the future.  Below are the Congressman’s remarks:

“Thank you, Madam Speaker.  I rise today to introduce a resolution establishing a select committee in this body to examine the causes of the current financial crisis.  This select committee, to be comprised of members appointed from the Committees on Financial Services, Agriculture, Energy and Commerce, and Oversight and Government Reform, is modeled on the Pecora Commission that held hearings in 1932 and 1933 to investigate the roots of the Great Depression.

“The Pecora Commission exposed a wide array of abusive practices by banks at the time of the Depression and resulted in the subsequent enactment of the Glass-Steagal Act of 1933 and Securities Act of 1934.  It is my ardent hope that the resolution I introduce today will foster a coordinated approach among the multiple committees of jurisdiction on this matter and lead to legislation that re-imposes a strict regulatory framework upon the financial services industry.

“As Ferdinand Pecora, the commission’s namesake, remarked about the outcome of its investigation, “Legal chicanery and pitch darkness were the banker’s stoutest allies.”  I urge the members of this body to take heed of Pecora’s words, now more irrefutably accurate than ever, and support this resolution, which will establish a time-tested mechanism by which to investigate and remedy the various unsavory practices that have led our Nation to an economic precipice of gargantuan proportions.

“Thank you, and yield back the balance of my time.”

Dingell Praises Governor Granholm, Advanced Battery Manufacturers on New Investment in Michigan

Dearborn, MI - Congressman John D. Dingell (D-MI15) praised Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm (D) and four advanced battery manufacturers that will commit almost $2 billion dollars to Michigan as they launch new manufacturing sites in the state.  The new investment will create more than 6,600 jobs in Michigan.

“I believe this project will be a big part of Governor Granholm’s legacy here in Michigan.  She has put the state in a position to be the leader in the production of advanced battery manufacturing in our country. The United States desperately needs to be competitive in producing this green technology.  She knew the companies would appreciate the outstanding workers and talent here in Michigan, and she made a wise move using tax incentives to close the deal.  Now, it is up to all of us in the Michigan Congressional delegation to make sure these companies succeed.  We will work with the Department of Energy to get them a fair opportunity for grant money. This project is critical right now and in Michigan’s long term future.  This is one big step forward in making Michigan a leader in creating green technology to be used around the world.”

Below are the four companies, their investments and the tax credits received:

  • A123 Systems – investing $600M based on $125.2M in Michigan state tax credits
  • Johnson Controls-SAFT - investing $220M based on $148.5M in Michigan state tax credits
  • LG Chem/Compact Power – investing $200M based on $125M in Michigan state tax credits
  • KD Advanced Battery Group – Dow Chemical, Kokam America, Townsend Ventures LLC – investing $665M based on $144.6M in Michigan state tax credits

Two companies have announced their site locations; Johnson Controls-SAFT will locate its plant in Holland and A123 has selected Livonia. Other plant locations have not yet been finalized.

Dingell Update

Dear Friend,

As a result of our hard work in last year’s election, Michigan ’s Congressional delegation was recently ranked as the fourth most powerful in Congress (see article).  We have Debbie Stabenow fighting for us in the Senate and we kept Carl Levin right where he belongs as our powerhouse senior Senator.  As Chairman Emeritus of the Energy and Commerce Committee and Dean of the House, I continue to fight for health care for every American and increased food safety for all.  Add to this a slew of focused policy makers such as my colleague from Northern Michigan, Bart Stupak, and two seats flipped from red to blue to give us Mark Schauer and Gary Peters—it is no surprise that Michigan is so powerful in Congress.  It is also more evident than ever that elections matter.  Thank you for using the election to ensure your voices are heard in the 111th Congress.

When it comes to executive accountability we hear your voices loud and clear.  As you know, we have spent much of the week grappling with the issue of how to hold AIG responsible for the obscene decision to pay $165 million in bonuses after receiving $170 billion of taxpayer money to stay afloat.  At a time when hardworking men and women around the country are making sacrifices daily, why should AIG reward executives whose decisions contributed to this crisis?  Today we passed a bill in the house that puts a 90 percent tax on any bonus paid by a company receiving money through the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP).  This applies to more than just the financial sector; if union workers have to make concessions, so too should executives.  We are all in this together and we will only recover when those on top floor offices wake up to the current reality.  I look forward to continuing the work of President Obama and the Congress as we lead this country forward.

A Message from Congressman Dingell

Dingell Update

Yesterday, I had the opportunity to attend the White House Regional Forum on Health Reform in Dearborn with Governor Granholm, Governor Doyle of Wisconsin, and Melody Barnes, Director of the White House Domestic Policy Council.  This forum was the first of many to be held around the country where policymakers join in a discussion with citizens, listen to your concerns about the inefficiencies of the current health care system, and gather your ideas on how to rectify them.

I listened to the countless and often heartbreaking stories of everyday citizens who are often uninsured or denied payment by their provider for extremely costly health procedures.  Adrian Campbell-Montgomery told the audience how her health care provider denied paying for a critical cervical cancer procedure, because she was 22 at the time and they only covered it for women over 26.  The failure of her health care provider to pay for the procedure left her and her young family in nearly $10,000 of debt.  To make matters worse, she is out of work, uninsured, and was recently diagnosed with ovarian cancer, for which she’ll need another $10,000 surgery as soon as possible.

Unfortunately, in these dire economic times I hear stories like Adrian’s much too often.  It is infuriating that we do not have a more inclusive health care system; one that efficiently provides coverage for every American.

Health care reform is one of the most pressing issues our nation is facing, especially in Michigan, where unemployment is the highest in the nation.  Health care costs are a major factor in our current fiscal recession, bankrupting companies, and making many families forego health insurance altogether.  One young entrepreneur at the forum spoke about how daunting it is to open a business, because with it comes the moral obligation and fiscal strain of providing health care insurance to your employees.

The time for action is now.  I have fought for universal health care in each Congress since being elected in 1955, and will continue to do so until that is realized. The President and his team have demonstrated a commitment to bringing reform to the current system through the $634 billion down payment, and by hosting forums all over the country like the one held yesterday in Dearborn. I commend the efforts of President Obama in bringing this issue to the forefront, and will work tirelessly with him to help reform health care.

Special Third Debate Update Special Edition
Topic: Updates

10:05 p.m.: Hey, John McCain just pissed off his pro-life supporters by flip-flopping on them and saying that he would not impose a litmus test on his appointees to the Supreme Court.  He praised Bryer and Ginsberg (two pro-choice Justices), too.

 -----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Pretty clear that Obama won the debate.  McCain tried to stay on the attack, but failed.

Wondering what the Barak Obama tax cut means for you?  Click here for their handy calculator.

Remember when the McCain campaign gave up on Michigan last week?  They said they were going to focus on Maine, instead.  Now the Republicans are pulling out of Wisconsin and Maine.   So where are all of those Michigan campaign people who went to Maine going to go now?

So where are we at with the Electoral College count? The winner: Obama.

Marie Cocco from the Washington Post may sum it up best.  Sometimes it's over.

Sarah Palin starts us off with a finding that she abused her power as Governor for personal reasons

You can read the actual report here.

And what does all of this this say about John McCain's judgement?  What does it say when he wants to run the Country, but can't even control his own crowds.

Want to see how this election is trending?  Click here.

Our club has endorsed Deb Kennedy for State Representative.  She is a school board member, small business owner, and is active in her church.  She would make an excellent State Representative.

Nobody is much talking about it, but Carl Levin is running for re-election.  We heartily support him.

This would be a good time to talk about Lt. Governor John Cherry.  Although he is not up for re-election this year, he is actively campaigning and supporting our Democratic slate.

As his Presidency fades into oblivion, President Bush says he still has a lot of work to do.  Hasn't he screwed up enough already?

Monday update

The Obama campaigns reminds us about John McCain's membership in the Keating Five scandal.  Without him it's the Keating Four.

The Supreme Court: another reason why this election is important.

An interesting idea to think about, why do we award all of the electoral votes in Michigan to one candidate or the other?

Want to know how Sarah Palin got through the debate?  Here's a peek at her notes.

Please note that we will be posting as frequently as possible until Election Day.  Expect a slowdown after that.

Most important development: McCain gives up in Michigan

              What does it mean?

What does Sarah Palin think about it.'

Remember the next debate on October 7!

What does Obama  do next?  We've got video from MSNBC!

McCain is getting more desparate.

Remember that Alaska probe of Palin wanting her ex-brother-in-law fired?  Can you say stonewalling?

They're covering up at the White House, too, over the U.S. Attorney political firings.

Let's not overlook our own local elections in Brownstown.  Here is our endorsed slate.

Ever want to see a list of John Dingell's many endorsements?  Hey, how come the Brownstown Democratic Club's endorsement isn't listed?

Speaking of the Congressman, here is his thoughts about the Economic Bailout.

Did you know Joe Biden is also running for re-election as Senator?  Neither did we.

How about that National Debt Clock?  Turns out President Bush has broke it.
